Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered a state of martial law in Ukraine.


On 24th February 2022; Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine over Ukraine’s relationship with NATO and Western powers. In response to which this Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered a state of martial law across the country. Now the question is what does this actually mean?


What is Martial Law?


It is originally spelled as “Marshal Law”. It refers to the temporary imposition of direct military control of normal civil functions or suspension of civil law by a government, especially, in response to a temporary emergency. It means temporary military control over normal civil functions and civil law. It is in relation to a state of emergency or when civil forces are overwhelmed for some reason.


In simple terms, Martial law is declared to impose an absolute rule of government on the public during various occasions like natural calamity, state of emergency, conflicts and absence of civil government.



Martial Law in Ukraine


Martial law was specifically introduced by Ukraine in 2018. This time, Martial Law would impose even harder restrictions in Ukraine than those imposed back in 2018. These may include a ban on movements, meetings, and political parties.


WHY did this happen?


Russia demanded that Ukraine must be essentially banned from being a NATO member. It did not only wants mere assurance but also a legal guarantee. This demand was turned down by the US and NATO, and Putin accused the US.


What is stated in the decree of the President?


On 24th February 2022, Martial law was imposed in Ukraine for a period of 30 days. In connection with the imposition of martial law in Ukraine, the Constitutional rights and freedoms of persons and citizens were provided for in the Constitution of Ukraine may be temporarily restricted.


Impact on India


India has been under pressure because of the conflict. It may lead to rising in crude oil prices and so overall inflation rates. The Indian Stock market has taken a heavy beating over the last few weeks owing to a potential tightening of policy measures in addition to the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
